As a teacher and educator for approximately thirty six years, I have always been driven by a passion to teach and impart knowledge to others. I have a strong desire to teach content that is culturally relevant to the students’ prior learning experiences thus nurturing their cultural identity and empowering them with the knowledge and skills to enable them to operate successfully in the global arena.
I trained as a teacher in South Africa where I taught mainly English and Mathematics to both primary and secondary learners.
After emigrating to Australia in the seventies, I taught English and other subjects in the Independent sector in Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland.
In the last fifteen years I specialized in English as a Second Language (ESL). In that time I furthered my studies at JCU Cairns, successfully completing a Bachelor of Education Professional Development. I have undergone extensive training to be a facilitator in ESL strategies such as:
- Fostering English Language in Kimberley Schools (FELIKS) in WA and Qld.
- First Steps in WA and Qld;
- Accelerated Literacy (Scaffolding) Program in Qld;
- National Language and Literacy Institute of Australia English as a Second Language Bandscales (NLLIA ESL Bandscales) in Qld;
- ESL in the mainstream
This extensive training in ESL assisted me greatly in my focus on delivering outcomes in Indigenous Education. My role over the fifteen years encompassed teaching English , Communication English, Mathematics, facilitating cultural awareness workshops for mainstream teachers, co-ordinating and heading Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Programs (ITAS), upskilling Indigenous Education Workers, submitting grants for funding purposes, reporting on educational outcomes, representing schools at educational forums, developing innovative programs and projects and writing articles for organisations.
With this repertoire of educational experience and training, Nybro Education Services aims to distinguish itself as a consultancy that will cater for the needs of learners, learning institutions and other stakeholders with reliability, positivity and creativity.
